How to Talk to Your Doctor About Alternative Therapies

Starting the Conversation Doesn’t Have to Be Awkward

You’ve done some research. You’ve heard about medicinal cannabis, herbal treatments, or other emerging options. But when it comes time to talk to your GP or specialist, the conversation can feel difficult to begin.

At TrueMed, we believe patients should feel confident and informed when discussing their care including alternative or plant-based therapies. Here are a few ways to approach the conversation in a way that’s respectful, constructive, and focused on your health goals.

1. Start With Your Symptoms, Not the Solution

Rather than saying, “I want to try cannabis,” begin with what’s bothering you. For example:
"I’ve been struggling with sleep despite trying different medications. I’ve heard about some plant-based approaches could we talk about whether that’s appropriate for me?"

Framing the conversation around your symptoms helps your doctor consider your request in a clinical context.

2. Acknowledge That You’re Exploring, Not Demanding

Doctors can be understandably cautious about new or unregistered therapies, especially those with a complicated public reputation. It helps to be clear that you’re not pushing for a script you’re asking for informed guidance.

Try saying:
"I’ve read a bit about medicinal cannabis for anxiety, and I wanted to ask your opinion. I’m not looking for a quick fix I just want to understand if it’s something worth exploring further."

3. Bring Evidence, Not Anecdotes

Your doctor is more likely to engage seriously with your interest if you show that you’re thinking critically. That might mean referring to clinical guidelines, patient education materials, or symptom logs you’ve been keeping.

4. Be Ready to Hear “Not Yet” and Ask What Comes Next

Even if your doctor doesn’t think you’re eligible now, they may be open to exploring it in the future. Ask what factors they’re considering, what alternative steps you could take first, or whether they’d be willing to refer you to a prescriber with expertise in this area.

5. Book a Consultation With TrueMed First

Still unsure how to approach the conversation? Our $50 Patient Solutions Consult is a low-barrier way to prepare. We’ll review your goals and symptoms, explain treatment pathways in plain language, and if appropriate refer you to a prescriber who understands plant-based therapies in context.

Sometimes, the best place to start isn’t in your doctor’s office it’s in a dedicated space where your options can be safely and calmly explored.
